This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this research study is to identify markers which predict the development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease in overweight adolescents. Previous research studies have demonstrated that changes in the lining of blood vessels associated with cardiovascular disease are already present in adolescents and these changes are more common in patients that are overweight. This study will also evaluate how a medication often used to treat diabetes mellitus, metformin, may reverse changes preceding the development of diabetes and cardiovascular disease in obese adolescents. All patients in the study will receive extensive education regarding changes in diet, activity levels and family support.
