The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.The polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a poorly understood disorder that affects approximately 6-10% of women of reproductive age. PCOS is characterized by chronic anovulation and hyperandrogenism, and is a leading cause of female infertility in the United States. Most women with PCOS are also characterized by insulin resistance, which plays a key role in the pathogenesis of PCOS and also places affected women at increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes. The long-term goal of this study is to elucidate the relationship between insulin resistance and PCOS.Dr. John Nestler is considered an expert in this area of research. This grant is a very clear continuation of his previous cutting edge work with PCOS women. Women will be recruited between the ages of 17 to 40.
