This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.Serum ferritin levels have been shown to be lower in adults and children with restless legs syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder than in unaffected controls. Treatment of these patients with iron (Fe) supplements results in resolution of most of their symptoms within a short time. We are proposing to study Fe absorptive capacity and Fe homeostasis in children and adolescents who have been found to have periodic limb movements of sleep on polysomnogram. We hypothesize that they have impaired Fe absorption and lower serum ferritins even though dietary intake of Fe is not different from children and adolescents who do not have these sleep problems as shown by sleep questionnaire.
