This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.There are three parts to this proposal. Part 1: The objective is to compare the efficacy of two breastmilk expression patterns on the initiation of lactation in mothers of VLBW infants (< 1500gm infants who are < 30-wks gestation).Part 2: The objective is to investigate the comfort and efficacy of 6 different breast shields in mothers with established lactation who delivered VLBW infants. Part 3: This part of the study will investigate compositional changes in breastmilk in these same mothers who are pumping, breastfeeding or doing a combination of both through the 57th post-partum day.
