This study represents a prevention model for nocturnal hypoglycemia management that is being tested in young children with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM); a group considered at greatest risk for the consequences of hypoglycemia.
The specific aims for this study are: to standardize parent capillary blood glucose monitoring (CBGM) technique and implementation of the home protocol, and to determine the effect of the intervention to prevent nocturnal hypoglycemia. Clinical strategies to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia are essential for young children with IDDM. This study will provide important information necessary for making appropriate hypoglycemia management decisions by members of the diabetes health care team and by parents.
