This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.Hypothesis:We propose to conduct an experiment in a small group of healthy normal volunteers to test our primary hypothesis: microbiota induces a significant increase in total EE and its components (particularily in resting EE) in humans.
Specific Aim es:1. To determine the whole-body energy expenditure before and after bowel clensing.2. To define the contributions of microbiota in resting EE, DIT, and activity EE.3. If our hypothesis is correct, we will then aim to determine the influence of the microbiota in determining energetic differences between lean and obese individuals.
