Abstract

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.Hypothesis: The oxidant stress associated with allergic asthma is regulated by the expression of antioxidant enzymes and dietary oxidants.
Aim 1 : To test the hypothesis that oxidant stress and ariway responses to allergen in allergic asthmatics are regulated by the genetic variants of glutathione S-transferase (GSTP1).
Aim 2 : To test the hypothesis that vitamin E will inhibit oxidative stress in the lung and thereby modulate nonspecific bronchial hyperactivity and the airway responses to specific allergen in allergic asthmatics.
