Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) refers to a group of rare, inherited dermatoses characterized by blisters and erosions at the sites of minor trauma. Staphylococcal infections are a common complication in these patients. Preliminary studies suggest that more than half of patients with EB are chronic nasal carriers. In other patient populations, such as patients undergoing hemodialysis or those with surgical wounds or burns, nasal carriage of staphylococci is associated with recurrent skin or wound infection with these organisms.
The aim of this study is to determine the efficacy of intranasal mupirocin ointment in eradication of nasal carriage of staphylococci in patients with EB. If this preliminary trial is successful, the effects of diminished nasal carriage on recurrent skin and wound infections will be examined.
