This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Inflammatory markers, as measured in the blood, have been linked to heart disease and when elevated are associated with increased risk of heart disease and stroke. Individuals who are overweight, sedentary, smoke or have poor dietary habits have been found to have increased levels of inflammatory markers. Weight loss has been linked to improved health including changes in lipids and inflammatory markers. The Intervent program is an individualized one-on-one program to help individuals improve their health through behavioral changes. This study is designed to see if individuals enrolled in this year-long program have changes in their markers of inflammation. Participation in the research study is separate from the decision to join INTERVENT.
