This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Children aged 7-14 years old undergoing painful medical procedures typically done with no or local anesthesia only (e.g., laceration repair), and their parents, will be studied. Surveys will be completed giving information regarding previous pain experiences, pain beliefs, and parent-child interactions. These beliefs, and the child's pain level as measured by pain scores and physiologic indicators, will be measured and compared in 3 ethnic groups: Caucasian, African-American, and Mexican-American. Post-traumatic stress symptoms on follow-up will also be measured.
