This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The overall training plan will cover one year training under the supervision of Dr. Matthew Budoff in between my 3rd and 4th year of medical school. In this year, I will be involved in multiple aspects of clinical research training. My main priority will involve working on a clinical research project assessing cardiovascular disease in patients with end-stage-renal-disease. I will learn to use and read EBCT scans (heart scans assessing coronary calcium and hence atherosclerosis), gain simple training in statistical analysis. Dr. Budoff will also be teaching me clinical cardiac skills throughout the year via cardiac patient exposure in both the inpatient and outpatient setting at Harbor-UCLA. I also plan to take part in all GCRC clinical research-related courses such as RCR, introduction to clinical research, conducting clinical trials courses, and biostatistics courses throughout the year. Dr. Budoff holds regular courses on EBCT interpretation throughout the year, which I will be attending. The entire month of July will be training, where Dr. Budoff spends the month evaluating studies with the student and cardiology fellow. It is anticipated that Dr. Shantouf will gain ample experience in understanding the heart and the anatomy through cardiac CT. Dr. Budoff will spend time with Dr. Shantouf every day, working on the project, or the skills he will need to do these clinical studies and gain experience in the research process. The extensive coursework offered through the GCRC and LA BioMed will be used to supplement his education.
