This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.Harbor-UCLA will be one of four sites participating in this initial UniHealth Foundation funded project. This pilot project is designed to assess the Healthy Eating & Lifestyle Project (HELP), an intensive intervention with obese children and their families. The project goals are designed to:+ Combine and synthesize approaches that have been shown to work in clinical situations and to adapt them to be provided in communities. + Help families with overweight children adopt healthier lifestyles.+ Assess the effect of the intervention on clearly articulated, self-reported and measurable outcomes. The project will enroll overweight and obese children 5 to 12 years old (children with BMI's 95%). Subjects will participate in a series of workshops, be engaged in physical activities and attend support groups.Measurable objectives of the intervention include: reduced weight/weight velocities; normal cholesterol levels; reduced body fat; improved exercise tolerance, food selection, exercise and nutrition self-efficacy; in creased exercise frequency; reduced TV viewing time; and decreased fast food purchases. Outcome data will be gathered and compared prior to enrollment into HELP, after the first five workshops are completed, and 6 months later. The data will help to design intervention protocols for obese children in Southern California. Although data will be gathered on the over 1,500 children and families enrolled in the project, complete data sets are anticipated for 280.
