This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Sarcoidosis is a multi-organ system disorder of unknown cause. Most frequently affecting the lower respiratory tract, little is known about upper respiratory tract involvement. Sarcoidosis of the Upper Respiratory Tract (SURT) is reported to occur in less than ten percent of patients, although up to fifty percent of patients have rhino-sinus complaints. No studies to date have examined the possible co-existence of allergic disease in this patient population. The current study aims to recruit patients with known sarcoidosis to evaluate them for the presence of concurrent atopy. Specifically, participants will undergo an evaluation which includes a directed history and physical examination, skin and blood testing for allergic disease, as well as a nasal exam to assess for nasal and sinus involvement with sarcoidosis, allergies, or both. This part of the evaluation will include obtaining several washings from the nose as well as a small biopsy.
