The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. As men grow older, their muscles tend to become smaller and weaker. Muscle weakness makes it difficult for older people to move around to do activities of daily living and increases the risk of falls and injuries. Blood levels of the male hormone testosterone in men decrease with advancing age. Scientists believe that lower levels of testosterone may contribute to both th eloss of muscle strength, and performance in older men and that giving testosterone may help to improve muscle strength, physical activity, and overall sense of well-being. The primary purpose of this study is to find out whether testosterone replacement increases muscle strength, performance, and function in older men (age 65-85) with low muscle mass (sarcopenia) and low testosterone levels. Another objective is to find out whether th ereplacement of testosterone in these men improves the quality of life. It is a randomized placebo controlled trial of the effect of testosterone vs. placebo on these outcomes, in these men.
