The purpose of this double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized study was to investigate whether or not the valerian root extract and herbal supplement reduced sleep disturbances in persons with arthritis. Participants were randomly assigned to received either valerian extract (600mg) or a placebo (600mg physiologically inert vegetable oil), which was taken one hour prior to bedtime. Sleep outcomes were measured for eight days (three baseline and five intervention) using both wrist actigraphy and self-report.
