This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this study is to test the relative efficacy of unfractionated (standard) heparin (UH) or low molecular weight heparins (LMWH) in preventing thromboembolism in patients with mechanical prosthetic heart valves. This study will measure markers of coagulation activation such as thrombin-antithrombin complex, D-dimer and prothrombin fragment F1+2 among mechanical prosthetic valve patients receiving either UH orLMWH during the peri-procedure period for surgery or other invasive procedure.
