This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The present study proposes to examine CSF and brain magnetic resonance spectroscopy in dementia patients. Specifically, the activity of specific enzymes (e.g., MMP-2) will be correlated with neurometabolites that indicate neuro-axonal injury and gliosis (NAA, Choline). Based on previous observations, we hypothesize that these markers will be present in patients for whom vascular injury contributes to or causes their dementia.
