This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The aim of this study is to determine in 10 subjects the feasibility of using the Radio Frequency BION System to treat the respiratory abnormalities of subjects with obstructive sleep apnea. The researchers will evaluate the effects of hypoglossal nerve/genioglossus muscle stimulation on reducing pharyngeal airflow resistance, increasing airflow and decreasing apnea/hypopnea events during sleep without waking the subjects. In addition, the study will evaluate the subject's self-assessment on sleep questionnaires before and after treatment to establish the subject's perception of therapeutic benefit.
