This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this pilot and feasibility study is to 1) investigate the current status of pregnancy planning among women with diabetes and 2) evaluate whether women with diabetes of childbearing potential, being cared for in a diabetes specialty clinic or primary care practice benefit from a one and one half hour women's health class entitled Women, Diabetes and Reproductive Health.
The aim of the study is to evaluate the effects of the class on the knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, self-care, A1C levels and birth control usage of diabetic women of childbearing age.Participants in this study will be 80-100 diabetic women of childbearing age who obtain their medical care from either the Joslin Diabetes Center or at a primary care practice within BIDMC Health Associates. Participation will involve two visits to the Joslin Diabetes Center for participation in a 90 minute education program and completion of demographic, psychosocial, health care and birth care attitude surveys. Participants will have blood drawn for A1c measurement prior to class participation; A1C results will be recorded from the patient's medical record if the test was performed within 6-8 weeks of class participation. The patient will come into the center two months post class to provide another blood sample for A1C measurement and to complete post class questionnaires.
