This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.Anorexia nervosa (AN) and hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA) are hypoestrogenic states accompanied by bone loss. The bone loss that occurs in AN is more severe than in HA, implicating an additional effect of nutritional deficiencies. Hormonal abnormalities, including hypercortisolemia, are seen in both disorders. In this study we will compare bone density, hormonal changes, and body composition in women with AN compared to women with HA and healthy controls.
