The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.The term temperament refers to the stable moods and behavior profiles observed in infancy and early childhood. Inhibited temperament are timid in situations that are novel, whereas uninhibited children spontaneously approach novel situations. Inhibited temperament in early childhood is a risk factor for the later development of social anxiety disorder. Previous neuroimaging studies of social phobia have not used populations whose temperaments were characterized in childhood. This unique study will combine behavioral observations from early infancy with diagnostic information and brain imaging in adolescence, a critical period of risk for the development of mental disorders.
