Abstract

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.Cognitive deficits are a persistent and relatively treatment-resistant feature of schizophrenia. The seeming generality of neurocognitive deficits in schizophrenia leaves one searching for a parsimonious explanation - a deficiency in a basic process that may be required in common by many cognitive functions.The goals of this study are to explore the basis of this sleep-dependent failure of consolidation and to determine whether sleep and cognition are improved by eszopiclone.
