This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The auto-immune and immune medicated pathologies of Crohn's Disease (CD) highlight the similarities it shares with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) from the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), specifically, in the areas of pathophysiologies, anthropometric alterations, and metabolic abnormalities.
Aims : Utilize proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy imaging to measure and to compare the levels of IMCL and IHL in active CD states to iactive CD states, and both to health controls. Link the levels of IMCL and IHL to levels of inflammatory factors, adipokines, and ROS in active and inactive CD states compared to healthy controls. Determine the relationship between the levels of IMCL and IHL to resting quotient and energt expenditure using indirect calorimetry (IC) and doubly labeled water; to body composition using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA); and fasting plasma glucose levels as determined by an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Model a metabolic profile of IMCL, IHL, and energy metabolism in Crohn's subjects to estimate appropriate sample size requirements for larger scale studies.
