This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this study is to investigate why Asian Indians are at a higher risk for developing diabetes and coronary heart disease compared to Caucasians living in the U.S. This study will test the hypothesis that Asian Indians are insulin resistant, exhibit altered body fat distribution and have endothelial dysfunction compared to Caucasians matched for age and BMI. We will also determine whether insulin sensitizers can improve insulin resistance and reverse the endothelial dysfunction in Asian Indians compared to Caucasians matched for age and BMI.
