This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The overall goal of this pilot study is to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed methods to screening, recruitment, intervention and assessment for the TRIP DM Trial submitted to the NIDDK as a new application on February 1, 2004. The TRIP DM Trail is a multidisciplinary translational study focused on translating the results of the Diabetes Prevention Program into practice. We plan to recruit, as participants, overweight and obese adults with pre-diabetes for randomization into a two-armed trail of an intensive, group-based lifestyle intervention with significant lay health counselor involvement compared with a usual care treatment condition, consisting of a single session with a registered dietician for brief advice and information regarding community resources. The primary outcome is insulin resistance as measured by the homeostasis model.
