This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.Marijuana is the most widely used illegal drug in the US today. Abuse of this drug is a national problem. Marijuana users have been shown to make poor decisions as compared to non using controls. The purpose of these studies is to understand why this is. We will test heavy marijuana users and controls on 3 tests: a decision making task; a memory task; and a test of impulsive or reckless behavior. We will test subjects while they are in the fMRI scanner to see what brain areas subjects are using to perform the tests. We believe that marijuana users make bad decisions because they do not remember the outcomes of their past choices (memory). We also expect that they will use different brain circuits to perform the tasks.
