This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.Purpose of Aim 3a and b Long-term stability of equol production and response to antibiotics 3a-The purpose of this 2 year (AIM 3a) observational study is to determine whether individuals who are 'equol-producers' will remain 'equol-producers' over an extended period of time in 'free-living' conditions, and whether those who do not make equol will repeatedly fail to do so. 3b-Since administration of antibiotics is such a normal part of medical treatment and is known to perturb intestinal flora, we will also (AIM 3b) determine how long it takes to re-establish equol production after a 7 day treatment of the antibiotic metronidazole (500mg once a day).
