This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this study is to assess possible biomarkers of inflammation in human urine. This study will provide information on the feasibility in determining the inflammation status of individuals using urine samples, which is important in accurately measuring nutritional status. Current methods of measuring inflammation are based on the determination of acute phase proteins in plasma or serum, which involve obtaining blood samples. However, obtaining a blood sample is an invasive procedure that requires the expertise of a trained phlebotomist. Nonetheless, phlebotomists sometimes may fail in accessing a vein, or blood volumes are sometimes insufficient for analysis of various analytes. Additionally, some individuals may be reluctant to participate because providing a blood sample, capillary or venous, is not culturally acceptable. This will be a prospective study of patients with acute respiratory infections (ARI) diagnosed, treated, and enrolled at the University Health Services, Ritenour Building. Enrolled Participants will be asked to provide blood and urine samples immediately upon their diagnose of IRA; these samples will be obtained at the University Health Services, Ritenour Building. Then they will come to the GCRC to provide blood and urine samples 7 and 14 days later.
