This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This is a Phase I trial of islet cell transplantation alone (ITA) for non-uremic Type I diabetic subjects with particularly brittle diabetes. The safety of islet transplantation and the ability of islet cell transplant to correct high blood sugar will be evaluated. The effect of islet cell transplantation on secondary complications (diabetic kidney, eye and nerve disease) and quality of life will also be assessed.
