This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This study will examine the separate and combined impact of nortriptyline (an antidepressant) and stress management in reducing pain and disability due to temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD). Two hundred and fourteen individuals with pain due to TMD will be randomized to take nortriptyline or active placebo (benztropine) for 10 weeks. Patients will also be randomized to also receive stress management or disease education during the same period. Pain, activity level, mood, and coping strategies will be measured before and after treatment, and patients will be followed for 6 months following the initial 10 week period of active treatment.
