Determine: reliability of phase contrast microscopic evaluation of subgingival plaque as a correlate of periodontal inflammatory status; utility of phase contrast microscopic evaluation of subgingival plaque as a diagnostic and prognostic tool; utility of videotape recording of phase contrast microscopic observation of subgingival plaque as a means of patient motivation; and relative efficacy of a combined regimen of flossing, irrigation, and regularly patient-applied hypertonic salts in oxidative antiseptic, compared with a conventional home treatment regimen of flossing and commercial dentifrice in the control of the subgingival flora and periodontal inflammation.
