The purpose of the Mass Spectrometry Core is to provide support for the projects by quantitative determination of steroids by liquid chromatography - tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) as its major activity. Additionally, specialized services will include identification of proteins separated by gel electrophoresis, identification and quantification of Ca2+-channel/receptor isotypes and their oxidationsensitive cysteine (Cys) thiols critical to function by methods based on electrospray ionization (ESI) and LC/MS/MS. These support needs were identified by the project leaders, and the requirements/methods were discussed in details through interactions with the core director to select the most appropriate ones to be implemented as core services. Equipments made available on a shared basis are a quadrupole ion-trap mass spectrometer for steroid analysis and a linear ion-trap - Fourier-transform ion-cyclotron resonance instrument for proteomics-related work. The systems also incorporate advanced liquid chrom atographs for sample separations. Core B will provide expert leadership, specialists and technical staff to perform the core services and provide full reports on the results of quantitative steroid analyses and on protein identification, quantification to the project leaders and research personnel.
