This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the ability to collect data on cardiovascular risk factors in a sample of incoming female students at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM). A majority of UHM students identify themselves as belonging to either Asian or Pacific Islander racial groups, and therefore represent a group of late adolescents which has not been specifically studied in regard to developing cardiovascular risk. Upon successful completion of this feasibility study, additional funding will be obtained and larger cohorts, including both men and women, will be followed during their collegiate years, and possibly beyond. 100 subjects will be recruited on campus, and will include brief presentations by study nurses during survey courses required of all incoming UHM freshman. Students will initially present to University Health Services (UHS) to consent to participation. At this time, they will complete an activity questionnaire and a demographic/medical history form and have blood pressure measured. Subjects will then be scheduled for laboratory and body composition studies at the Clinical Research Center (CRC). Studies will include a lipoprotein profile, 2 hour oral glucose tolerance test. Anthropometric measures will be taken. Body mass index and waist to hip ratio will be calculated. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) will be used as the criterion standard for body composition determination. These values will be compared with those calculated using skin fold and bioelectrical impedance measurements. Subjects will return to UHS after one year for repeat of select measures.
