This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.This supplemental project funding is further expanding the research capacity of Maine's INBRE institutions by: (1) strengthening network connectivity infrastructure among Maine INBRE institutions to support inter-institutional data exchange and communication needs, and ultimately to enable Maine to participate in Northeastern regional and national cyberinfrastructure programs; and (2) enhancing the Maine INBRE's computing infrastructure to support the increased need for storage and exchange of data for INBRE-supported research and research training programs. These infrastructure improvements will facilitate collaborations, communication and data sharing among our INBRE institutions in Maine and in our region by providing critical connectivity and data storage and backup infrastructure. Project funding is allowing the extension of fiber optic cable to Bates, Bowdoin and Colby Colleges, College of the Atlantic and the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory (MDIBL). INBRE institutions will then be able to connect to the new Research and Education Network, funded earlier this year with a state supplemental budget appropriation to the University of Maine. The Network will significantly enhance high-speed connectivity among research, education, healthcare, and government institutions in Maine and link them with other national networks. Data will be able to travel over the non-commercial 'Internet2,' the highly advanced worldwide network dedicated exclusively to scientific research and education. Access to Internet2 will mean data transmission speeds of 10 Gbps (gigabytes per second), rather than the current .5 Gbps.
