This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The Biology Core Facility provides ND INBRE researchers access to state-of-the-art research equipment and education in their application and use. The Facility consists of DNA analysis, cell biology, tissue culture, and bioassay instrumentation. All equipment is currently available in Genomics Facility, the Cell Biology Center, and the COBRE Core Biology Facility on the NDSU campus. In late Summer, 2004, the Biology Core hired Dr. Jerzy Bilski, a histologist, into a 50%-appointment to serve as Educational Specialist on behalf of the Biology Core. In Fall 2004, Dr. Bilsky visited with the nine INBRE investigators and their students in the Scientific Network to assess their needs in education and research collaboration with the Biology Core Facility. A similar series of visits occurred in the Spring of 2005 when he was accompanied by Dr. In-Su Hahn, the director of the Proteomics Facility. As a result, five, week-long summer workshops have been scheduled which include training in various combinations of histotechnology and image analysis, PCR (polymerase chain reaction) and RT-PCR (real-time reverse transcription PCR), and DNA sequencing analysis. Evaluators will collect feedback on these workshops to help determine their value and impact. After the training sessions the Educational Specialist will continue to consult with students and faculty as they utilize the various techniques in their research projects. Dr. Bilski has prepared detailed information about the Biology Core Facility to be placed onto the INBRE web site. He has prepared a Career Corner for the INBRE web page, which describes graduate programs offered at UND and NDSU to encourage students from undergraduate colleges to enter graduate programs at these institutions related to biomedical sciences. He organized monthly educational seminars through interactive video network for all the INBRE institutions Evaluation of the training activities and the use of the facilities is on going.
