This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The Animal Sub-Core advises on matters regarding animal care and use in the COBRE projects or pilot projects. Dr. John Harkness is the Animal Sub-Core director and is a board-certified (ACLAM) laboratory animal veterinarian. Activities of the Animal Sub-Core include advising on applicable regulatory matters, implementation of a stringent biosecurity program (based on consultation with Dr. Lauretta Gerrity of University of Alabama - Birmingham), continued operation of a sentinel program, routine husbandry and veterinary care, advice to project and pilot project directors concerning animal issues or manipulations, e.g., anesthesia and assistance with animal protocols, purchase and per diem charges, and direction of animal caretakers involved with the animals used in COBRE projects. In addition, animal numbers used on each of the COBRE projects are tracked by this sub-core.
