This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The Center for Psychiatric Neuroscience (CPN), a Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE), is a multidisciplinary team of basic neuroscientists and clinical psychiatrists. To ensure the continued advancement of cutting-edge psychiatric neuroscience research at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMC), the primary mission of the CPN is to facilitate the transition of early career faculty researchers to independent neuroscientists with major research grant support. The CPN is therefore dedicated to building research infrastructure by equipping faculty researchers with state-of-the-art behavioral, molecular biological, and neuroimaging resources and by providing critical mentorship to developing career neuroscientists. The ultimate goal of the CPN is to gain a greater understanding of the function of the brain and nervous system and develop novel strategies for the treatment of psychiatric illnesses. The goals of the Administrative Core are to enhance, strengthen and diversify the academic research environment of the CPN, to broaden and strengthen psychiatric neuroscience at UMC (Small Grants Program), to provide essential administrative support for all program-related activities. The staff of this core is responsible for purchasing and fiscal management, personnel, implementing the Small Grants Program, coordinating program related travel by the investigators and visits by invited consultants and speakers, and preparing annual reports to the National Center for Research Resources. The Administrative Core also holds monthly meetings to disseminate important information to the project investigators and to evaluate the progress and effectiveness of the Research Resources Cores, assists in organization of scientific meetings and seminars related to the program, and coordinates research progress assessment by the Center's External Scientific Advisory Board. The Center for Psychiatric Neuroscience (CPN) at the University of Mississippi Medical Center is directly funded by the National Center for Research Resources, a component of the National Institutes of Health. NCRR provides Institutional Development Awards to foster research in specific geographic areas with the goal of strengthening biomedical and behavioral research by building an organization s infrastructure and increasing its capacity to conduct cutting-edge biomedical and behavioral research. In addition to NCRR support, the University of Mississippi Medical Center has made a major commitment to the CPN by providing matching funds for research and for an expansion of laboratory space through a major renovation project. These financial and material resources, along with the dedicated support of basic science and clinical mentors, enables the CPN to lay the groundwork for neuroscience research excellence through the productive partnership between the National Center for Research Resources, the University of Mississippi Medical Center, and the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at UMC. The CPN has made significant progress in developing research infrastructure and promoting interdepartmental research efforts in basic and clinical neuroscience research at UMC and in the state of Mississippi. Small Grants Program. The ultimate goal of the Small Grants Program is the diversification of approaches to psychiatric neuroscience, to lure young neuroscientists into the realm of psychiatric neuroscience, and to provide funds for new research by faculty at the beginning of a potential research career. Applications are reviewed by the CPN Institutional Research Grant (IRG) Review Committee, William Woolverton, Ph.D., Chairman. After final IRG-approval, proposals are submitted to the CPN External Scientific Advisory Board and NCRR, respectively, for funding concurrence. Funded investigators become active members of the CPN and their participation in CPN activities (lecture series, training seminars) is mandatory.
