This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of the Institutional Development Award (IDEA) program is to foster health-related research and to increase the competitiveness of investigators through support of faculty development and enhancement of the research infrastructure of institutions located in states with historically low aggregate success rates for grant awards from the NIH. Thus, we established a Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) with the thematic focus of Vision and Ophthalmologic Research. The COBRE and its Core Facilities are headed by established NIH-funded investigators and includes five young investigators who do not have a prior history of NIH R01 support. Dr. Matsumoto who has expertise in two-dimensional gel electrophresis, mass spectrometry, and the analyses of proteomics data directs the Ocular Proteomics/Bioinformatics Core. The completion of the draft of human genome in February 2002 eloquently predicts the future of biomedical sciences. Without an efficient use of genome data the biomedical sciences in any area will suffer from slow progress. Upon this background, the Proteomics/Bioinformatics Core assists all of the participating vision researchers with the pertinent techniques and scientific guidance in ocular proteomics. The COBRE Proteomics/Bioinformatics Core is based on the existing P30 National Eye Institute Vision Research Analytical Biochemistry Core Facility and renders the capability of running two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, image archiving and analysis, in-gel digestion, peptide mass fingerprinting for the identification of target proteins, datamining through the analysis of multiple two-dimensional gel data, and genome database and relevant bioinformation searches through the Internet.
