The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Rheumatic Disease Core Center (RDCC) is amultidisciplinary program designed to foster and promote the application of scientifically rigorous, state of theart techniques to important questions in biomedical research in order to advance our basic understanding ofdisease and, thereby, improve the diagnosis and treatment of patients with arthritis and musculoskeletaldiseases. The Administrative Core is specifically designed to coordinate RDCC activities while facilitatingnteractions and collaborations, promoting scientific development, setting the strategic agenda, andperforming continuous evaluation of ongoing programs. The Administrative Unit will enable optimalcoordination of the various components through its committees and regularly scheduled meetings andseminars serving to enhance communication and scientific development among the various investigators.Three committees have been established to ensure the highest quality in the operation of the RDCC: theExecutive Committee, made up of the Center Director (Carter), the Associate Director (Mountz), and thedirector of each core (Accavitti, Kesterson, Keyser and Carter); the Internal Advisory Committee, chaired bythe Director of the UAB Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Center (Kimberly); and the External AdvisoryCommittee (Fox, Holers, and Ivashkiv). These advisory groups will counsel and assist the Center Director inmaximizing the strengths of the RDCC cores, Pilot and Feasibility projects, and Scientific EnrichmentProgram and with strategic planning in each of the thematic areas of the RDCC. The Executive Committeewill also be a forum for feedback from the advisory committees established for each core. The CenterDirector will be responsible for operations, communication, and overall leadership. The Associate Director will have primary responsibility for oversight of the P&F projects. The personnel of the Administrative Core are highly motivated and experienced and will assist the Director, Associate Director and the three committees by ensuring efficient communications, logistical support and fiscal responsibility in the operation of the RDCC.
