The Biopolymer Resource provides advice and technical services to RPCI staff in DNA sequencing, synthesis, and characterization of oligonucleotides and peptides; the isolation, purification and characterization of proteins and peptides; mass spectrometry of synthetic organics, drug and drug metabolites (pharmacokinetic studies); and peptides and proteins (proteomics). The Biopolymer Resource supports the staff in developing and understanding the uses and applications of the various services provided ensuring convenient access to these and related technical services. To accommodate the evolving research needs and interests of RPCI faculty and to support the technical requirements of their projects, the Biopolymer Resource continually evaluates and implements new methodologies and acquires new instruments. The facility is heavily used by CCSG members. In 2001-2002, the Biopolymer Resource provided services to over 60 investigators from all five CCSG Programs, who collectively hold over $13.8M in peer-reviewed funding. The technical services offered by the Resource have increased and diversified, and as a result of the newly recruited faculty, further increases in Resource utilization are anticipated. Information regarding services is disseminated through seminar series and CCSG program and workshop meetings. The Strategic Plan is to continue to provide contemporary technical services and assistance to the CCSG Program members with peer-reviewed funding. An area that has been targeted for further development is that of proteomics, particularly as it relates to the use and applications of mass spectrometry.
