The Cell Center was established in 1973 and has been funded by the NCI as a Shared Resource through the Core Grant since 1980. This facility provides consultation, training and services in the areas of cell culture and hybridomas. It also provides a full range of cell culture media and molecular biological reagents that are needed by Cancer Center investigators for use in their own laboratories. David Gasser, PhD, Professor of Genetics, serves as the Cell Center's Facility Director. Dr. Gasser is an immunogeneticist whose research has primarily dealt with genes that control the immune response, both in vivo and in vitro, and has experience with hybridomas and lymphoblastoid cell lines. Dr. Gasser has held numerous leadership positions within the University during his tenure. At the time of the last competitive renewal, the Cell Center was praised for being highly cost-effective because of its large volume pricing and for the centralized production that provides a level of quality control that would otherwise by difficult and time-consuming to duplicate in individual Cancer Center member laboratories. Throughout the current project period, the Cell Center has expanded its services and has continued to experience a steady increase in usage. Cancer Center members account for 44% of total usage, while Cancer Center members with peer-reviewed funding account for 39% of total usage.
