The Scientific Imaging Shared Resource (SISR) is a centralized, highly specialized Shared Resource available to all Cancer Center members. The SISR (formerly the Electron Microscope Shared Resource or Central Imaging facility) has been upgraded in 1999 with the addition of instruments, space, and personnel. The SISR now offers expertise in Transmission and Scanning Electron Microscopy, Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM), Fluorescence Microscopy and Image Analysis (IA). Because these methods are technically demanding , requiring expensive and sophisticated instruments, and because the individual Cancer Center members do not use these methods in high frequency to maintain expertise in their execution, these research methods are ideally suited to be offered by a Shared Resource. The SISR is directed by Dr. K.G. Murti who has over 34 years expertise in all of the above areas of microscopy and has published over 100 research papers. He has directed this Shared Resource since 1985 with the help of an electron microscope technician, Mrs. Donna Davis, who has about 40 years experience in histologic and electron microscopy techniques. Another technician, Mr. Ken Barnes was hired in 1999 to help operate the CLSM and IA systems. Mr. Barnes has a Master's degree in Microbiology and considerable computer and graphics experience. The SISR currently occupies about 1,250 sq. ft. of contiguous space in the plaza level of Danny Thomas Tower. The space contains two rooms for two electron microscopes (JEOL1200 EXII TEMSCAN and Phillips 301), a room for Leica TCS NT SP CLSM and IA system, a dark room for EM negative processing, a dark room for print processing, a room for confocal and cryo-EM preparation, an area for sectioning with two Sorvall ultra microtomes and an area for general EM specimen preparation.
