The Administrative Unit will establish coordination both within andbetween Cores and Center-affiliated Projects. One key activity will be coordination of the Center's Pilot ProjectFunding Program. This process will begin each year with a formal solicitation of proposals. A mailing will besent to all faculty members in the UCSD School of Medicine, as well as select investigators with relevantinterests from outside UCSD, and community groups such as the Community Research Foundation andNAMIWe will invite applications for one-year projects in the standard NIH grant format with a limit of five pagesand a budget of up to $10,000. The Pis and members of the Partners' Council will present their comments tothe Center Director for his consideration, with comments then relayed to the project investigator for revision ofthe proposed project. If a project fits within the parameters of the Center and is revised adequately, it will besent to members of External Advisory Board (including appropriate community members) who will assignpriority scores, and prepare written comments on each proposal. The review criteria will include, in addition tothe ones listed below under 'Practical Clinical Trials', the following ones: 1) Feasibility of implementing theproposed work in a community setting, 2) Scientific merit, 3) Compatibility with the Center mission, 4)Innovation, 5) Inclusion of junior or new scientists or a community partner, and 6) Likelihood of future externalfunding for the project as well as of community sustainability. Once the reviews are returned to the CenterDirector, a funding decision will be made by the Partners' Council, taking into advisement the externalreviewers' comments and priority scores
