This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The program was written as support software for protein identification algorithms used in database search. The algorithm translates DNA or RNA sequences from different file formats into polypeptides using all six frames and saves the information in a file using the fasta format, which can then be utilized by the search algorithms in theGPM, Knexus and Prowl platforms. It has been used to convert non-fasta files into their corresponding fasta analogs as well as in changing the genetic code table for organisms that present modifications of the standard genetic code. This program was particularly useful for protein identification experiments performed with the organism Tetrahymena thermophyla, a collaborative project between Prof. David Allis?s laboratory at the Rockefeller University and our laboratory. The algorithm is complete and currently in use.
