This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The SSRL Structural Molecular Biology and Molecular and Environmental Interface Science groups jointly hosted a workshop on STXM and x-ray nanoprobe capabilities and the need for these methods in geological, environmental, and biological sciences. The workshop was held July 9-10, 2007.
The aim of the workshop was to explore current and future science that could be addressed by using x-ray microscopes with nanoscale resolution, and include the capability of x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The workshop brought together 43 participants who represented geo-, environmental and biological sciences, as well as leaders in x-ray nanoprobe instrumentation from across the US, Canada and Europe. The workshop consisted of 1.5 days of scientific and instrumentation talks, followed by a half day of working group discussions. Participants were divided into groups based on their scientific interests and asked to identify the most important scientific drivers in their subject areas and the instrumentation needed to answer these questions. A workshop report was generated that will provide a blueprint for further planning.
