It is proposed that a biotechnology resource be established to promote the application of lasers in biomedical research. The resource would broaden the operation of the existing San Francisco Laser Center, an NSF regional laser lending facility, to provide its lasers and related technology in support of biomedical research. An extensive array of state-of-the-art laser systems would be available for short-term loan to scientific and medical researcher. Staff of the center would advise prospective users on all aspects of laser use and performance. The staff would maintain and install the lasers. They would provide on-site instructions in the proper and safe operation of the equipment. A new program to develop laser biomedical instrumentation parallels the existing lending effort to push state-of-the-art techniques in instrumentation and applications. Establishment of the resource would provide an unprecedented opportunity to the research scientist to apply laser technology in attempts to solve biomedical problems. It would be a most cost-effective means for testing innovative approaches and ideas to improve upon the basic understanding of life processes.
