This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. We are developing interferometric techniques for detecting the rapid optical and mechanical changes which accompany electrical signals in neurons and nerve fibers. The goal is a broadly applicable technique for monitoring the activity of many neurons simultaneously, for extended periods, and with minimal invasion to the cells. Current studies involve in vitro rat hippocampal neurons; in vivo studies are also planned.
