This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.A tour of the Center for In Vivo Microscopy educates visitors about the principles of MRM, CT, and our other imaging technologies; animal care and support protocols; and current research applications. Demonstrations of animal preparation stress animal care policies and the value of animal models for research purposes. Over this last year, short tours were given, as well as more extended training sessions about how to operate the MR systems, build RF coils, monitor and support small animals, and use our visualization tools. Some of our visitors this reporting period included the following:Summer 2006: Howard Hughes Programs for undergraduate research, intended to provide an excellent research experience to Duke undergraduates as well as encouragement to consider and plan for research careers in the biological and biomedical sciences; G. Allan Johnson provided mentorship to Meredith Metcalf.June 14, 2006: Representatives from Hamamatsu to view our in vivo luminometer, to provide feedback on our design; (with Gabriel Howles, graduate student)July 10, 2006: Thomas Foo PhD, MR operations manager, GE Global Research and Development, visted the lab and Libby Bucholz (graduate student, who did an internship at GE with Dr. Foo's group).July 19, 2006: Bill McLaughlin (Kodak) to set up and demonstrate the new xray/bioluminescence/ fluorescence molecular imaging system, and provide a presentation to our group.August 15, 2006: Pierre Couture (Advanced Research Technologies, Canada) toured the lab with Dr. Al Johnson to discuss use of Fenestra in our CT studies.August 16, 2006: Charles Keller MD, Children's Cancer Research Institute, University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, TX, visited NIEHS for a seminar 'Advanced Tools for Reproductive Toxicology Using MicroCT-based Virtual Histology,' toured the CIVM to see our microCT system.September 10, 2006: Qingwei Liu (Biomedical Engineering grad student, UNC-Chapel Hill), PhD student met with graduate student Mandy Song and GA Johnson to discuss mechanical ventilation of small animals.September 7-8, 2006: Deborah Slipetz, Ben Chen (Merck Frosst) met with Bastiaan Driehuys and toured the Center to discuss proposed contract, which since that time has come through.September 12, 2006: Siavash Yazdanfar PhD -- GE Global Research, on campus to Biophotonics Fall Seminar Series arranged by BME; Met with Dr. Cristian Badea to discuss his research interests and possible collaboration with our group.September 19, 2006: Kathy Gabrielson DVM, Johns Hopkins Medical School, toured the lab with Laurence Hedlund as her host to view our animal support systems.September 19, 2006: Rolf Peterson, GEMI Fund, visited Bas Driehuys (who is under funding from his organization) and surveyed Dr. Driehuys' work with hyperpolarized gases.September 20, 2006: Christakis Constantinides, PhD, University of Cyprus, Nicosia, Cyprus, visited/toured the lab and met with faculty members to discuss a long-term collaboration with our group.September 28, 2006: Beth Winkelstein PhD (Bioengineering, Univ. PA) candidate for Duke BME faculty position, met with Dr. Laurence Hedlund and toured the lab.September 28, 2006: 15 participants in the 6th Annual Fitzpatrick Institute for Photonics Symposium on Photonics at the Frontiers of Science and Technology toured the lab with our graduate students as hostsNovember 30, 2006: Dr. Ravi Menon, Scientist, Robarts Research Institute, Professor of Medical Physics, Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, and Psychiatry, at Duke to present a neurobiology seminar 'One of these things is not like the other: Differences between fMRI and electrophysiology' visited the lab for tours and meetings with our graduate students.December 6, 2006: Wendy Harrison DVM, laboratory animal veterinarian (GlaxoSmithKline) and Dr. John Norton Directory of Duke Division of Laboratory Animal Resources, with interest in the Duke animal imaging facilities toured the lab with Dr. Laurence Hedlund.January 10, 2007: Dr. Charlie Irvin, Vermont Lung Center, toured the lab with Dr. Bastiaan DriehuysApril 9, 2007: Raul A. Brauner PhD, Bio-Tree Systems, Inc., Framingham, MA, visited Crisitian Badea for tour of micro-CT imaging facilities, which led to sharing of data.April 10, 2007: David Jaffray PhD, Senior Scientist Division of Biophysics / Bioimaging, Ontario Cancer Institute; Head, Radiation Physics, Princess Margaret Hospital; Principal, Image-Guided Therapy Group, Ontario Cancer Institute; Fidani Chair in Radiation Therapy Physics, Princess Margaret Hospital, Associate Professor of Medical Biophysics, University of Toronto presented a medical physics lecture 'Image-guided radiation therapy,' and toured the Center with Dr. Laurence HedlundApril 11, 2007: Pradeep K.
