This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Abstract: Several novel bacterial species have been identified in laboratory rodents. Notably, we have identified novel species of Helicobacter and several species of bacteria that have not been classified; the latter are referred to as cilia-associated respiratory (CAR) bacilli. To further characterize these and other novel bacteria, we routinely sequence the 16S rRNA gene and use these sequences for classification. We also frequently employ sequence analysis of PCR fragments to confirm specificity of reactions.
