This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.Ultra-short TE STEAM and spectral editing with MEGA-PRESS were used to validate the accuracy and reliability of the non-invasive quantification of ascorbate (vitamin C) in the brain. Quantification of ascorbate is challenging due to spectral overlap and close proximity of the water signal. In spite of the strong overlap of ascorbate spectrum with resonances of other brain metabolites in STEAM spectra, concentrations provided by LCModel analysis were in very good agreement with the results of the spectral editing optimized for ascorbate (Terpstra et al. 2006a). These results have proved that quantification of ascorbate simultaneously with other brain metabolites is feasible. In addition, inclusion of ascorbate spectrum into data analysis improves the quantification of other metabolites.
